What Was Chernobyl?

On April 26, 1986, all hell broke loose in a small city in Ukraine. Chernobyl was home to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, a state of the art Soviet design that featured four RBMK-1000 nuclear reactors . The power plant, an icon of Soviet achievement and capability for the time, suffered a failure of the worst kind.

Reactor number four, during an experiment, exploded. In actuality, it suffered a series of failures that led to a complete shutdown of the reactor. Though, as was discovered by example, the design of the reactor was flawed. Instead of shutting down, it caught fire, exploded, and melted down.

To this day, aside from the use of nuclear weapons in World War II, there has been no accident that has come close to the severity of Chernobyl. It is the mission of this website to educate as many who are willing to listen about Chernobyl, its causes, and its effects.

We are not here to preach about the dangers of nuclear power. Instead, we are here to present factual events and photographs of modern-day Chernobyl. It is not our goal to sway to for or against nuclear power, and in fact we believe that nuclear power can be a safe and inexpensive means of generating electricity, but instead it is our goal to show you the results of when the system fails and something goes very, very wrong. Keep your mind open, but more importantly, your hearts as well.
